»Kato Kiyomasa«, the ruler of Kumamoto in the late 14th and early 15th century, is anchored in »Kato Shrine«.

The shrine was originally built between the main tower of Kumamoto Castle and the Uto Tower and was called "Nishikiyama Shrine". In 1874, he was transferred north to the Kyomachi area of Kumamoto, and in 1962 he was relocated to his current location.

Kumamoto's main summer festival, Seishoko Matsuri, takes place every year on the fourth Sunday in July at the shrine. Then the children disguise themselves like "Kato Kiyomasa" and move through the city.
