Bike Touring Highlight
Kettwig, located directly on the Ruhr, is today one of the southern districts of the city of Essen. The community Kettwig belonged until 1800 to the imperial abbey Werden. From 1800 to 1975 Kettwig was an independent city in the district of Mettmann with about 20,000 inhabitants. On January 1, 1975, the previously belonging to the district of Dusseldorf Kettwig was incorporated into the city of Essen; the westernmost Kettwig district Mintard fell to Mülheim an der Ruhr. Other parts went to Heiligenhaus and Ratingen.
