Le Puy-en-Velay Cathedral and Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe Chapel

The city is one of the oldest French centers for Marian pilgrimages and is picturesquely situated in the lovely volcanic area of the Velay and therefore has a corresponding cultural and touristic importance.
The aim of the Marian pilgrims was a black Madonna in Notre Dame Cathedral. The Saint-Michel-d'Aiguilhe church is one of the most important and - due to its exposed location on an old volcanic vent - one of the most striking buildings in the city, alongside the cathedral.
The pink Notre-Dame-de-France statue of Mary on the Corneille lava rock above the cathedral is also visible from afar.

Le Puy-en-Velay is the largest town in the Haute-Loire department.
Eye-catchers are of course the volcanic basalt peaks, on which succinctly picturesque buildings are enthroned - such as the cathedral and the church of Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe.
The basilica stands on the Rocher Corneille, the remains of a volcanic cone and is the bishopric of the diocese of Le-Puy-en-Velay and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A monument not only for pilgrims who come through Le-Puy, the cathedral is therefore a well-visited sight at almost any time.

Whoever visits Le Puy should not miss to taste the well-known, green Puy lentils, which are processed into delicious dishes in many of the local restaurants.
