The approximately nine-hectare protected forest serves to preserve and promote the near-natural development of a naturally occurring beech forest in its diverse forms, maintaining its unique beauty and strengthening the ecosystem's capacity to function.
It is being studied long-term without direct human intervention to understand forest structure, soil, flora, and fauna, and is also used as a demonstration area for silviculture and forestry education.
As part of the Natura 2000 site "Ruppiner Schweiz," it protects, in particular, the woodruff-beech forest as a habitat type of European importance, thus safeguarding genetic resources and the biodiversity of self-regulating forest communities.
