The State Library of Victoria was built in the Victorian style from 1854 and is on the Victorian Heritage Register.
The library has been open to the public since 1856, when it had 3,846 books. As of 2013, it has a stock of over 2 million books and 16,000 magazines. The special features of the collection include the diaries of the city's founders John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner, the writings (folios) of Captain James Cook and, from the 19th century, Ned Kelly's original armor.
