The former plant was founded in 1901 by what was then "Rheinische Stahlwerke zu Meiderich near Ruhrort", later a subsidiary of the Thyssen Group. The total of five blast furnaces produced 37 million tons of special pig iron in their 84 years - usually as a preliminary product for further processing in the Thyssen steelworks.
