Best Hikes to St. Michael's Chapel on Michaelsberg (Cleebronn)

Tips

  • The church on the Michaelsberg presents itself today as a predominantly Romanesque building, which was supplemented by Gothic, Baroque and modern elements. The relatively small building offers space for around 100 worshipers inside. Excavations below the church provided a few findings about the earlier church mentioned in a document in 793, which was probably a Carolingian building. It was significantly smaller in size, the square tower was opposite to today's half-timbered tower on the west side.

  • Very well preserved chapel on the Michaelsberg with a small cemetery. Nice view over the Heilbronner Land.

  • At the highest point of the Michaelsberg the visitor will find the most famous Cleebronner building: the Michaelskapelle. This building, which today serves the Catholic parish, can look back on a very long and eventful history.
First mentioned in a document in 793, St. Michael's Church was the center of an early Christian district. After an eventful history of ownership, the church's use temporarily ended in the 16th century. The church was used as a barn. It was not until 1727 that the church was restored under Count Johann Philipp von Stadion (who also had today's Cleebronner town hall built) and a Capuchin hospice was built in 1739. This was managed by monks until 1823. The buildings of the hospice of the Diocese of Rottenburg have served as a youth center and educational facility since 1959.
The Romanesque church building is characterized above all by the choir with a simple, diamond-coated ribbed vault and early Gothic frescoes of the four evangelists. The church has been renovated several times in modern times. The building is currently at the end of a comprehensive renovation, during which the dilapidated vault was also thoroughly repaired.
