The Osterseen are located south of the Starnbergersee in the district of Weilheim-Schongau in Upper Bavaria. The southern and central Osterseen with the large Ostersee belong to the municipality of Iffeldorf an den Osterseen, the northern Osterseen from the Stechsee and the Frechensee belong to the municipality of Seeshaupt am Starnberger See. The over 1000 hectare area has been a nature reserve since 1981, but there are bathing areas and even a campsite.
