Hikes to Blà Bheinn rank amongst the finest in Britain. This majestic outlier of the Black Cuillin ridge was described by Skye’s mountaineering pioneer Alexander Nicolson as the finest single mountain on the island. Better still, unlike many of the Munros on the main ridge, it is possible to reach Blà Bheinn’s summit without delving into the nervy ground of high-end scrambling.

That’s not to say you won’t need your hands every once in a while. After all, this is a mountain built of the same viciously dark, gabbro foundations as the Sgùrrs to the west. Fortunately, when dry, gabbro is one of the grippiest rocks around. Unfortunately, this trait is reversed when wet.

The great Cuillin outlier and one of the most spectacular mountains in Britain

Blà Bheinn’s complex form is completely unmistakable. Its distinctive twin summits and muscular ramparts are a maze of gullies and jumbled rock, like the petrified backbone of some gargantuan beast.

Walking routes to Blà Bheinn from the head of Loch Slapin enjoy the classic vantage of the mountain and ascend steeply, whilst approaches from remote Camasunary Bay take on the rocky staircase that is its long south ridge. Take care between the two main summits, as a steep gully clamber is unavoidable.

Regardless of route choice, you’ll be blessed by simply awe-inspiring views of the jagged profile of the main Cuillin ridge. If you’re really lucky, you might catch a sight of one of the resident golden eagles gliding high above Loch Coruisk. From the summit, the view north over neighbouring Garbh-bheinn to the lochs and islands of the Inner Sound and the Sound of Raasay is sensational.

Elgol is the starting point for a walk along the coast to Camasunary Bay and its bothy. The bay is also a majestic spot for a wild camp. Torrin is a good base for approaches from the east, with a number of lodging options. Broadford is the closest centre, with more choice of accommodation.

In winter conditions, Blà Bheinn is as serious as they come in Britain and should be left to experienced mountaineers with appropriate equipment.

    Hiking

The views and the climb up to Blà Bheinn are exceptional. The ascent from the west starts pretty harmless, then leads over a ridge to the first lower summit at 3,038 feet (926 m). From there, you have to scramble down a gully to the gap between the two summits. Be careful when you climb up to the true summit at 3,048 feet (929 m). From the top, you get a great view over Loch Scavaig.

    Hiking

Skye’s sublime outlier, Blà Bheinn might just serve up the best view in all of Scotland. From Loch Slapin, it's a steep scramble over grippy gabbro rock to the crown of ‘the Blue Mountain’ – and from here the spiky wonders of the Black Cuillin ridge rise deliciously into view ahead.

This is one of my favorite mountains in the UK. The views from the top are incredible. Some scrambling going to the top but really not that hard
