Arcos de la Frontera is a city in the province of Cadiz. Arcos is one of the well-known white villages. Above all, the old town, which stands on a steep cliff, is worth seeing.

Gateway to the Route of the White Towns, Arcos is considered one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. There are traces of its first prehistoric and Roman settlers at the Sierra de Aznar site, but the city owes its imprint and current physiognomy to the Muslim culture.

Its old town, declared a Historic Site, where monumental jewels such as the castle of the Dukes (15th century), the Puerta de Matrera (11th-14th centuries) and the remains of the walled enclosure, its palaces and stately homes, the Basilica of Santa María, the church of San Pedro, as well as numerous temples, chapels and convents.

Arcos de la Frontera is one of the larger of the "Pueblos Blancos" and lies with its ~ 31000 inhabitants on a hill. Along Río Guadalete there is an unofficial path to the iron bridge "San Miguel", from where you can "conquer" the city from the outside, as it once did. The old town is beautifully picturesque, with narrow streets and Moorish arches, as befits itself. You can also see that everything is very realistic, and not artificially pimped up for the tourists. In fact, people with different incomes live here. It was fun to walk through the streets, although sometimes it was a bit tight with the cars 🙈. Here you can see the "Basilica Menor de Santa Maria de la Asunción" (16th century) at the Plaza del Cabildo, because here everything is very close to each other.

My recommendation: Parked down somewhere and discover the old town on foot. At the Tourist Info there are free plans in different languages, listing a total of 37 (!) Highlights.
