In the steam pumping station you will find the Arkemheen visitor center with a beautiful bird viewing point. There are regular exhibitions (in summer). On meal days you can even admire the steam pumping station 'under steam'.

Until 1863, the Arkemheen Polder was able to drain naturally into what was then the Zuiderzee.
Then a windmill was built for drainage, which served until the construction of the steam pumping station in 1883.
The steam pumping station was built in 1883 to drain an area of 3,000 hectares.
This pumping station served until 1983 and was replaced by an electric pumping station, but it is still functional and has been used repeatedly because the electric pumping station alone could not handle the drainage.
Today there is a visitor center in the pumping station, it is part of the cultural heritage of the Netherlands.
