First a watchtower, since 1535 a residential tower. Very impressive

The first court dates from before 1179 and we do not know what it looked like. The foundations of the current tower date from the thirteenth century. In 1535 the tower was largely demolished and a new one was built on it. It had become so dilapidated that in 1868 it was decided to demolish the old tower up to the first floor and to build a new section on the remains in neo-Gothic style of that time. The architect was Jan Brink Evers. The outer walls were plastered gray so as not to be able to see the difference in stones. Today it still looks like this and it is clearly visible in winter from the provincial road (N348) from Arnhem to Zutphen, when the trees are bare.(nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelderse_Toren)
