A certain time after the sinking, the hollow filled with rainwater, into which sulfur compounds found in deeper coal seams found their way. The trees standing in the water turned into a sunken forest. Source: Information board at the sunken forest.

One of the well-done stations of the interesting educational trail "Geotourism Trail - The Former Babina Pit". Here many dark tree trunks stick out of a red lake. They look like picking sticks standing abandoned in the water. The trees once stood on solid ground. However, since lignite was dug underground and large cavities were created, the ground eventually sagged over a larger area. The trees remained standing, but were flooded and gradually died. Such "sunken trees" can also be found in the other post-mining lakes see forests.
