To protect the Mühlhausen suburbs, an outer city fortification was built in the 14th century. Of the original three high gate towers, only that of the outer women's gate from the 15th century has been preserved. After driving through from the west, an impressive view of the former imperial city opens up. The barrel vault shows late Gothic tracery with keystones with foliage ornamentation. On the outside, a formerly painted niche, arched windows with tracery, the holders for the gate leaves and the joints for the portcullis have survived.
