The location of the pilgrimage church could not be more impressive: it stands on a massive quartz rock stick in the middle of Pleystein. The rock is designated as a natural monument. The first Kreuzberg church was built in 1814, but burned down in 1901. The reconstruction of the baroque style church was completed in 1908.

The Kreuzbergkirche stands on a quartz rock. From 1851 to 1920 quartz was mined and sold as a raw material for porcelain and glass production.
However, the "City of Pleyenstein" - translated from Old High German "City on the shiny stone" - did not want to deprive itself of its landmark and in 1920 prohibited mining and has since been protected as a natural monument.

It is definitely worth walking up to the church, the view over Pleystein is great.
