Inside the island there are seven distinct crater lakes, some of which are separated by a narrow ridge. They are all named after their scenic characteristics: the Lagoa Funda is the "deep lake", the Lagoa Branca the "White Sea", the Lagoa Seca the "Dry Lake", the Lagoa Comprida the "Long Sea", the Lagoa Rasa referred to as "shallow lake", the Lagoa Lomba as "hill lake" and the Lagoa Negra as the "Black Sea".
