On September 25, 1964, King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola presided at ceremonies for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Liège. The highlight of the day: the inauguration of a bronze statue of King Albert I on the banks of the Meuse and near the Albert Bridge. The sculptor Charles Leplae had given the King Chevalier a picture that reflected the memory of the people, but San covered him with his head straight and sitting on his horse, defender of the country in his uniform as Commander in Chief of the armies in 1914.

The year 1934 promises to be difficult from both an internal and external point of view. The king often appears disillusioned; To distract himself, he goes on mountain hikes when his schedule allows. In anticipation of his future climbs in the Alps or the Dolomites, he trains on Belgian cliffs. On February 17, 1934, at the age of 58, Albert managed to devote, between the morning audiences and the sports ceremony which would take place in the evening in Brussels, a few hours to climbing on the rocks of Marche-les-Dames, in the valley of the Meuse, near Namur. He leaves the palace around noon accompanied by his only valet Théophile Van Dyck and takes the wheel of his Ford towards Namurois. Having reached Boninne, he leaves his car in a meadow, asking Van Dyck to wait for him. An hour later, the king returned and announced that he was going to make a second ascent. Around 5 p.m., Van Dyck was worried not to see him return because he knew that the king was expected in Brussels that evening. Albert will never come back. The next day, around half past one in the morning, his body was found.

Riding in Liege can be pleasant and relaxing. Nice bike paths along the river banks.
