    Hiking

White Path Moss has great views over the valleys and boulders in the ferns. It can get quite windy indeed at the ledge, but climbing down a few metres or getting further off the plateau often helps quite a bit.

Stanage & Higger Tor loop from Hathersage — Peak District National Park

    11.2km

    330m

    330m

Embark on a moderate hike through the Peak District National Park with the Stanage & Higger Tor loop from Hathersage. This 6.9-mile (11.2 km) route features a diverse landscape, from paths through fields and woodlands to open moorland with rocky gritstone outcrops. You will gain about 1079 feet (329 metres) in elevation over approximately 3 hours and 19 minutes, encountering varied terrain that includes rocky sections and potentially boggy ground after rain. From Stanage Edge, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Hope and Derwent Valleys, while Higger Tor offers impressive vistas over the Burbage Valley.

Starting from Hathersage, a village with amenities like pubs and cafes, this trail requires a good level of fitness due to its challenging sections and significant elevation changes. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended for the uneven and rocky ground. While the trail is accessible year-round, be prepared for potentially slippery conditions on rocky paths and boggy areas, especially after wet weather.

This loop is notable for its iconic gritstone escarpment, Stanage Edge, a popular spot for climbers and a filming location for "Pride & Prejudice." You will also pass the distinctive Higger Tor, known for its 360-degree views and interesting rock formations. The route also offers glimpses of the tranquil Padley Gorge and the ancient Iron Age hill fort of Carl Wark, adding historical and natural interest to your journey.
