The center of North Rhine-Westphalia is in the Dortmund district of Aplerbeck.
The work of art "Cocoon" symbolizes the center of the country. The 2.50 meter high monument shows the outlines of NRW. This is spanned with steel cables.

Ideal starting point for a walk in the forest!

Here is some information about the artwork:

The artwork, which is located at the geographical center of North Rhine-Westphalia, was created by the artist Christine Böse in 2019. The initial question was "What is a work of art"?
Where is the axis of a country? What is the state of NRW about? What is central to NRW today?
In the past, NRW stood for industry. Coal mining and steel production shaped the country.
For some years now, however, NRW has been experiencing a unique change, a metamorphosis, the full result of which is not yet foreseeable.
In nature, such a change, a metamorphosis, takes place protected in a KOKON.
The outline of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is cut from steel and mirrored around an inner axis so that it can be seen from all directions. The sculpture is encircled by a steel wire KOKON. The material steel refers to the country's past. The KOKON symbolizes the magical structural change and the networking of NRW in the present and future.
The incredible versatility of the KOKON sculpture places NRW at its center in Aplerbeck.
The starting point of the figure is the outline of the map of NRW. This outline is arranged twice on an axis at right angles to the center. Both outline contours were welded together at right angles and connected to a base point.
This is how the cross-shaped basic structure was created, around which the steel wires were then tensioned and welded.
