September 21, 2025, War Memorial Obelisk

Although their foundation often dates back more than a century – many were erected after the First World War (1914 to 1918) – they are by no means mere relics of a bygone era. The message of the almost ubiquitous "War Memorials," which continue to commemorate the victims of war and tyranny in villages and towns, remains relevant today. Despite certain similar basic patterns, the design of the memorials varies from place to place. But what they all have in common is the urgent appeal to remind us – each generation anew – of the necessity of preserving peace.

Denham Castle, also known as Castle Holes, was built in the early 12th century by the third Earl of Clare. During its construction and occupation period, it was also referred to as Desning Castle. Currently, only the earthworks of the castle and its wall, along with the surrounding ditch, can be observed.

This is a very modest church, yet with a rich history, as there has been a church in Hargrave for at least 1000 years. The oldest part dates back to the 12th century, which is the nave of the current building, although likely only the south door retains the original design. The brick tower was constructed in the mid-15th century.

This War Memorial honors 44 individuals who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars. The Memorial takes the form of an obelisk, and the original was inaugurated in 1920.

St Peter's church in Moulton, is south of the village and just off the Icknield Way Cycle Trail. It overlooks the river valley below. The church has been here since Norman times.

The left hand bend after leaving Ashley turns more than 90 degrees - easy to get caught out with too much speed and find yourself heading over to the wrong side of the road.

August 25, 2022, Dalham Descent

On the Dalham to Ashley road, you will descend or gain 188ft of elevation over a distance of about 1.25 miles, giving an average gradient of 2.4%. If you're cranking out some mph, there is a give-way just before entering Dalham that isn't immediately obvious, and there are no preceding give way warning signs (that I spotted!).

August 25, 2022, The Fox Inn, Ousden

Can't do better than quote the welcome from the Fox Inn's website, "Where the unique and wonderful gather to enjoy exquisite food and drink, spectacular music and a grand old time. It’s a place where laughter is not far away, where musicians and performers can play their craft and where new friends can become old friends over a glass of something wonderful." Quite a billing to live up too? You will find that the Fox Inn does so admirably. Add to this at 123m it is the highest point in Suffolk that you can buy a pint, with the county top itself (Great Wood Hill) only a few metres higher.

Watch out for the give way at the junction halfway down the descent after the road swings left then right.

Medieval packhorse bridge beside the ford over the Kennett at Moulton. Still in use and bikeable (with a shallow step at each end of the bridge).

The Fox is a lovely and friendly pub. I enjoyed a fine pint of Greene King IPA which wasn’t a difficult choice - I was weaned on this stuff! There were a few locals already inside when I arrived and in the immediate absence of the Landlady, it was they who let me in and welcomed me. Others were coming and going and the atmosphere really was that of a public house in the true sense. With the sun streaming in, and a nice fire in the corner, it would have been easy to have stayed for “the other one” or two.
