The gorgeous land to the south of Scotland’s pretty capital, Midlothian is an absolute treat. Walks in Midlothian have something for everyone: stunning winter hill routes for discerning ridge-walkers, countryside ambles for all the family and pristine country parks for gentle strolls.
It was Sir Walter Scott who said he ‘never saw anything more beautiful than the ridge of Carnethy’ in the Pentland Hills. Some of the finest hikes in Midlothian explore this delightful landscape of domed summits and wild pastures. An adventure here rewards you with staggering views of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.
Midlothian’s many reservoirs make for lovely circular routes, such as the scenic Gladhouse Reservoir, nestled at the base of the Moorfoot Hills. For a challenge, ramble up the rough moorland of Blackhope Scar, the region’s highest point at 2,136 feet (651 m). Your prize will be extensive views to the Pentlands and the Lammermuir Hills in the east. Wonderful.
