This was our starting point for the circular tour. Amazing from below, it looks even more impressive from above! Looking down gives you a thrill :) The dam is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. A stamping station is available for tours.

The dam is rather unspectacular. The path along the west side of the reservoir is also not worth the effort. The view of the lake is usually blocked by trees, even in winter, as the trees are so densely packed that the trunks obscure the view.

The history of the dam is also exciting. You can find out all about it in the information center on the dam wall.

While Döschnitz itself is a small municipality without large natural lakes, the surrounding region of Thuringia is known for impressive reservoirs and dams. These include significant structures like the Bleiloch Dam and the Hohenwarte Dam, as well as the Leibis-Lichte Dam, which are popular for recreation and offer scenic views.
Yes, the region features several notable dams. The Leibis-Lichte Dam is a prominent man-made monument, part of a 15-kilometer circular hiking trail. Additionally, the Bleiloch Dam and Hohenwarte Dam, both among Germany's largest reservoirs, are located in the broader vicinity and offer impressive sights.
For stunning vistas, visit Schneiderfelsen - Touring stamp 169, a viewpoint offering terrific views of the Leibis-Lichte Dam. Another excellent spot is the View of the Leibis-Lichte Dam, which provides perspectives of Germany's second-highest dam.
The area around Döschnitz and its lakes is ideal for various outdoor activities. Yes, several locations are suitable for families. The Leibis-Lichte Dam is considered family-friendly, offering an impressive backdrop for walks. The Stänkerloch Lakeside Rest Area also provides a pleasant spot for families to linger with a shelter and seating.
The dams in the region, such as the Bleiloch Dam (built 1926-1932) and the Hohenwarte Dam (built 1936-1942), are significant engineering feats. The Leibis-Lichte Dam, for instance, is one of Germany's highest and serves as a crucial drinking water supply for eastern Thuringia and for flood protection.
Beyond the dams themselves, the region offers natural beauty within the Thuringian Forest landscape. The Schneiderfelsen viewpoint is set amidst this natural scenery, providing a perfect resting place. The Leibis-Lichte Dam also features an open-air sculpture trail with natural sculptures made of oak wood, inviting visitors to experience the interplay of water and landscape.
Visitors particularly appreciate the stunning views, especially from spots like Schneiderfelsen, which offers a terrific panorama of the Leibis-Lichte Dam. The impressive scale of the dams and the tranquil resting places, such as the Stänkerloch Lakeside Rest Area, are also highly valued.

While specific regulations for each lake may vary, many outdoor areas and trails in Thuringia are generally dog-friendly. It's always advisable to keep dogs on a leash, especially in nature protection areas or where wildlife is present, and to check local signage for any specific restrictions at individual sites.
The lakes and dams are beautiful year-round. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for hiking and cycling, with vibrant foliage in the fall. Summer is ideal for water-related activities and enjoying the lakeside rest areas. Even in winter, the snow-covered landscapes around the reservoirs can offer a serene experience for walks.
While the major dams are well-known, smaller bodies of water like the Elsterschänke Dam near Arnsgereuth, though facing some structural issues, hold local significance and offer a different, more secluded experience. It was once a swimming lake and is still important for fire-fighting water supply.
