passing picturesque lakes such as the Chiemsee, Simsee, and Steinsee – the Salt Loop takes you to Upper Bavaria’s most beautiful waters. Heading southeast from Munich, the third-largest city in Germany, the Salt Loop is one of three Wasser-Radlwege (Water Cycleways) which runs through Upper Bavaria.
The 236-mile (380-km) loop stretches between Munich, Mühldorf, Bad Reichenhall, and Rosenheim and reveals many hidden stories about the region’s waterways. As you cycle, you will learn about the area’s white gold, salt. The towns of Mühldorf, Altötting, Burghausen, Traunstein, Freilassing, and Rosenheim, which lie en route, were shaped by salt production and trade. A short detour from the route, you can visit the salt trading capital, Bad Reichenhall where you can delve even deeper into the history of salt.
In this Collection, we guide you along the Salt Loop from Munich in nine stages. You can, however, start from any point along the route as it’s a circular. Depending on your fitness level, you can combine the stages together to complete this adventure in less time. We’ve also included details of two other routes you can take as well as a small detour to Bad Reichenhall and Berchtesgaden. There’s also plenty of accommodation and places to stop for refreshments en route. The ADFC Bed & Bikes offers ideal bike-friendly accommodation geared towards cyclists.
You choose whether you want to ride the whole route at once or complete individual stages. For more information on how to reach the start and end point by public transport, visit: bayern-fahrplan.de/en/journey-planner.
If you are interested in the other Water Cycleways in Upper Bavaria, you can continue on the Hop Loop or Culture Loop which starts from Munich centre. Alternatively, you can take the train from the Art Loop to the Salt Loop. You can learn more about the 745-mile-long (1,200 km) network of cycle paths in Upper Bavaria here: komoot.com/user/oberbayern/collections.
