The Jämtland Triangle is one of Sweden’s most well-known multi-day hikes. This loop connects the STF mountain stations of Storulvån, Sylarna and Blåhammaren through a network of well-marked trails, forming a triangle of around 47–50 kilometres (29–31 mi) in total. It’s a popular choice for hikers looking to explore the mountains without carrying a tent, thanks to the comfort and services available in the huts.

Most hikers begin in Storulvån, located at the end of the road about 60 kilometres (37 mi) from Duved. It’s easy to reach by train and bus from Stockholm or Östersund, and makes for a smooth entry into the highlands. From there, the trail leads south to Sylarna, passing through vast open valleys with views of the Sylarna massif ahead. The second day continues to Blåhammaren, the highest mountain hut in Sweden, before returning to Storulvån via a long ridge and gentle descent.

Each hut offers bunk beds, drying rooms, food, snacks and the option of full board. At Sylarna and Storulvån, there are also restaurants and saunas. This makes the route especially appealing to those who prefer to travel light. In late summer, the weather tends to be more stable and the trails are clear of snow. The best time to visit is between late July and mid-September.

With relatively gentle gradients, clear signage and reliable mobile coverage, the Jämtland Triangle is ideal for beginner hikers — but also rewarding for experienced trekkers looking for a relaxed pace, varied terrain and great infrastructure.

The final stage of the Jämtland Triangle is also the easiest — a 12-kilometre (7.5 mi) descent from Blåhammaren back to Storulvån. After days in the mountains, it’s a gentle return to the starting point, with wide landscapes and a well-marked trail underfoot.
