The Gendarme Path is a stunning 85-kilometre trail that explores the coastline of Southern Jutland in Denmark. What makes this journey truly unique is its prestigious status as one of Europe's certified "Leading Quality Trails," a mark of its incredible natural beauty, clear signposting, and deep historical significance. For decades, this route was patrolled day and night by Danish 'gendarmes'—border guards who kept a vigilant watch over the frontier. As you walk, you are following in their footsteps, treading a path that is woven into the fabric of Danish history.
Typically hiked over five stages, this path is wonderfully accessible and suited for families and hikers of most fitness levels. The trail guides you along the shoreline of the Flensburg Fjord, taking you past iconic historic landmarks like the battlefield at Dybbøl Mill and the magnificent Sønderborg Castle. The route is incredibly varied, leading you through ancient, lush forests and into charming coastal towns and old fishing villages.
The best time to explore the path is between May and September when the Danish summer is at its finest. You'll find a fantastic range of accommodation along the way, from primitive shelters for a night under the stars to cosy, welcoming inns offering local hospitality. The region's excellent public transport makes getting to the start in Padborg and returning from the finish at Skovby straightforward. My advice is to take your time, pack for all weathers, and immerse yourself in this incredible journey through Denmark's beautiful landscape and its rich history.

While you won't be scaling high peaks, this section presents the hilliest terrain of the entire 84-kilometre route. The path challenges you with constant, yet manageable, ascents and descents through a landscape carved…
