Waddenhoppen is the pursuit of hopping between the Wadden Sea’s West Frisian Islands. While many may have it on their bucket list, few actually set out to do it. This is mostly down to the perceived practical difficulties. After all, there’s no regular public transport between the islands and the crossings that do exist are often infrequent. However, with a little forward planning, you can have one of the quintessential cycling experiences in our lowlands.
This summer, Douwe and I, along with our fully loaded gravel bikes, stepped onto the ferry and hopped all five Dutch Wadden Islands. Over six days, we travelled from Texel to Schiermonnikoog by land, sea and air, all without setting foot on the mainland.
