Your adventure on the Jordan Trail – culture, history and the Red Sea

The Jordan Trail is a completely unique and spectacular adventure, boasting rich history, fascinating culture and breathtaking natural beauty. The 675-kilometre (420-mi) trail, which has been welcoming long-distance hikers since 2015, allows you to experience Jordan in all its splendour, from the rolling green hills in the north to the impressive desert landscapes in the south.

If you want to get a taste of the Jordan Trail alongside an experienced guide, or simply want to take the hassle out of planning the adventure yourself, you can book a guided, multi-day hike with accommodation and delicious meals all included in one complete package. You can even hire camping equipment for your nights under the starry skies.

As soon as you set out from Umm Qais, you’ll feel the history that accompanies you on every step of the way. You’ll hike through ancient Roman ruins and traditional villages, where you’ll be met with warm hospitality. Over a cup of tea or a night in a Bedouin camp, you’ll immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of the country.

On your way from north to south, the landscape evolves. From forested mountain slopes around Ajloun, the Jordan Trail ventures through the fertile valleys of the Jordan Valley with its impressive wadis, which range from narrow gorges to expansive riverbeds. Along the way, you’ll follow the traces of various civilisations. Jordan was the centre of a flourishing trade route around 4,000 years ago, which extended to Asia during the time of the Nabataeans – a nomadic Arabic tribe – in the first centuries BC. Ancient Roman roads also form part of the trail.

Petra, the legendary city in the rocks, is perhaps the main highlight. This archaeological marvel, with its impressive buildings carved into beautiful sandstone, captivates all who lay eyes upon it. However, the Wadi Rum, lined with red sand dunes and massive rock formations, or the famous Dana National Park, where Bedouin life is still a tradition, are just as beautiful and awe-inspiring.

The crystal-clear Red Sea at Aqaba forms the spectacular finale. After countless unforgettable experiences – from mountains, desert, sand and starry nights in the tent – you can relax in the warm water and begin to reflect on an adventure that’ll live with you forever.

Despite the Jordan Trail’s majesty, be aware that it’s a challenging route through the desert. Some sections lead through pathless terrain or along barely recognisable trails. Expect cool to freezing temperatures in the morning and evening, and sweltering heat during the day. Spring and autumn are the best times to attempt the trail, as they avoid the hottest days of summer.

Water is a scarce resource. If you’re ever running low along the way, don't hesitate to ask the locals, who’ll be happy to help and have a chat. We’d also advise always keeping an eye on the weather. In desert regions, even distant rain can turn seemingly dry riverbeds, through which the trail passes during some sections, into raging torrents – so-called flash floods. Before you embark on the adventure of the Jordan Trail, we recommend researching the current conditions on the trail, as well as general travel and safety advice.
