The Alta Via 2 of Valle d'Aosta, a region of northwest Italy, leads you into a world of natural wonders, earning it the nickname ‘Alta Via Naturalistica’ – the High Nature Trail. The route begins in Courmayeur and takes you through the Gran Paradiso National Park and the Mont Avic Regional Park before reaching your destination in Donnas.

Normally designed as a 14-day journey, I've divided it into six stages to offer both a trail running challenge and the ambiance of a hiking experience. The terrain is ideal for trail running. This adventure spans about 180 kilometres (112 mi), and is demanding but incredibly rewarding. It takes you to an altitude of nearly 3,300 metres (10,800 ft), through challenging sections that demand alpine experience and good physical fitness. However, the route does not include via ferratas and the terrain doesn't require any additional equipment.

History plays a significant role in this route. The Gran Paradiso National Park was established in 1922 by order of King Victor Emmanuel III to protect the ibex, which was facing extinction due to rampant hunting. His predecessor, King Victor Emmanuel II, established the Royal Hunting Reserve there in 1856 to create a place where only the royal family could hunt. The highest peak in this area is the Gran Paradiso, captivating mountaineers at 4,061 metres (13,323 ft). The Mont Avic Regional Park, founded in 1989, is characterised by dense forests of Swiss pine, Scots pine, larch and beech trees. Lakes and wetlands serve as habitats for rich biodiversity, while rock formations recount the history of this landscape once covered by imposing glaciers.

The best time for a hike on the Alta Via is from late June to mid-September. However, even in the early summer months, there may still be snow in the higher elevations.

To minimise the weight of your backpack, each stage ends at a refuge or a small village where you'll find warm showers and cosy beds to rest your weary muscles. Trail running shoes and a few warm, waterproof layers are essential to brave the weather fluctuations in the high mountains. You can also camp in designated areas along the way if you prefer. However, note that wild camping is prohibited throughout the entire Gran Paradiso National Park, except for specially designated areas. Outside the park, camping below an altitude of 2,500 metres (8,202 ft) in the Aosta Valley is prohibited. Along the entire route, campsites are available.

To reach Courmayeur, you can take a train from Turin or Milan to Aosta, and then a bus to Courmayeur. Alternatively, Donnas is well connected by train to the main cities of Piedmont and Lombardy.
Lace up your trail running shoes and get ready to experience the exciting Aosta Valley. Enjoy the adventure!
