Ostwestfalen-Lippe? OWL? What? Never heard of it? Then I invite you to get to know my favorite region in North Rhine-Westphalia. If you grew up or live here, then come with me on a tour of discovery through many beautiful cities, surrounded by lots of green nature, small villages and historic city centers.

Ostwestfalen-Lippe consists of the seven districts of Bielefeld, Herford, Minden-Lübbecke, Lippe, Höxter, Paderborn and Gütersloh. Although I am not talking about metropolises with world-famous buildings, mountains or monuments here, OWL convinces with many small and special eye-catchers. For example, in Rietberg in the district of Gütersloh, a group of 'everyday people' poses in front of the beautiful half-timbered town hall. The everyday people are concrete sculptures by the artists Christel and Laura Lechner, and through their detailed representation they enchant many a bare spot into a magical stage - also in other OWL cities. My tip: Stand with the group and take a souvenir photo.

Not only art, but above all a lot of forest and lush fields with a kilometer-wide view let you escape very well from everyday life in Ostwestfalen-Lippe. If you cycle through the Teutoburg Forest, you can't avoid one or two hills. But you will be rewarded with a view of the imposing Kaiser Wilhelm Monument in Porta Westfalica. You can admire crystal-clear springs on the Pader in Paderborn or be convinced by the impressive Schloss Neuhaus. So you see - monotony does not arise on these routes.

Furthermore, the cycle path network in OWL is very well developed. Often you drive on parts of long-distance cycle paths such as the EmsRadweg, the Germany route (D9) or pass routes such as the LandArt, which promises many cultural stations along its route.

The three tours are designed so that you cross at least two districts each. After you have driven all three routes, you deserve the imaginary 'OWL Order', because with the bicycle you have then explored 270 kilometers of this region.

Depending on the tour, the required fitness levels also vary. Flat country and wide views over fields? A treat for calves that are otherwise confronted with mountainous routes. The corresponding tour starting in Rheda is also completely suitable for beginners. However, the further north you go, the more strenuous it becomes: The Teutoburg Forest challenges you with a few hills and in the Lipper Bergland you should also have an advanced level of fitness if you climb the almost 500 meter high Köterberg.

All three rounds start at train stations, so you can also do the tour past Kaiser Wilhelm with a start in Bielefeld from the furthest corner of the Höxter district.

Have lots of fun exploring my favorite region in North Rhine-Westphalia - and I say that as a Cologne by choice. ;-)
