As a metropolis in eastern Westphalia, Bielefeld has a lot to offer. Sparrenburg mountain towers above the city and, depending on your route, you’ll see it ahead on the horizon. This student city offers a lot to discover: culture, cafés and more. As a road cyclist, you’re sure to have fun in the surrounding countryside too.
Bielefeld is located directly on the Teutoburg Forest and part of this low mountain range runs through the city. This means you can’t avoid climbing, no matter which sport you undertake. However, your efforts are always rewarded with the best views of the region and the most beautiful hairpin bends and climbs. You’ll soon forget your aching legs on the descent afterwards.
This Collection has five Tours between 50 and 125 kilometres (31 and 77 mi) long, which send you over altitudes ranging from 300 to 1,600 metres (980 to 5,250 ft). Depending on how you feel, you can decide to go for a long ride or a short loop. You should be relatively fit to take on the routes with demanding climbs.
Of course, one ride takes you to the region’s most famous landmark – the Hermann Monument. Each Tour conveniently starts and finishes in the centre of Bielefeld.
I’ve included a few good spots for you to take a break during your ride. Your hard work should be rewarded, of course, so I’ve recommended post-ride coffee spots and a well-deserved pizza on some of the routes.
The starting point is the sculpture park of the Kunsthalle Bielefeld. It is initially flat for you out of the city, always along the Teutoburg Forest. If you need a first little break after almost 20 kilometers, it is best to take it with the most beautiful view of the Tatenhausen moated castle.

If you want to collect a few meters of altitude from Bielefeld, you've come to the right place: The first small climb starts after less than four kilometers and extends over around three kilometers. With an incline of six to seven percent in the meantime, this is a good warm-up.

Start and finish of this round is the old cycle track in Bielefeld. The distance and the altitude difference are perfect for a quick summer lap after work to leave the city behind for a moment. But the route also cuts a fine figure at any other time of the day.

If you don't want to climb the 1,000 meters in altitude every time or don't have too much time, this round is perfect for you. It starts at the coffee wharf, where the route ends again. So you have the opportunity to enjoy the good coffee before or after - or even both.
Out of the city, faster asphalt…

If you don't have time for a longer route, this quick round trip from Bielefeld is perfect. Over a little more than 50 kilometers and just under 330 meters in altitude, it takes you from the sculpture park in the middle of Bielefeld past Werther to the north. You cycle back to the city via Vallenbrück…
