In the year 1163, twelve young monks from Volkenroda set out to establish a new monastery. They walked almost three hundred kilometers through picturesque landscapes along the Unstrut, Leine and Weser rivers. Around the old castle of Lucca, they found a suitable place and founded the Loccum Zisterzienser convent. Strongly rooted in their homeland, they made the return journey to Volkenroda monastery once a year.
Even today, the two places are closely connected. The 295-kilometer-long Loccum-Volkenroda pilgrimage route, opened in 2005, leads from monastery to monastery. Mainly through Lower Saxony and Thuringia, you hike through varied low mountain landscapes, historic towns and charming village idylls on 17 stages, passing countless churches, chapels and monasteries as well as the former inner German border.
At the starting and ending point, you will find a sculpture by the artist Karl Imfeld. Both works form the group 'Beginning and End'. At these pilgrimage sites, your hike on the Loccum-Volkenroda pilgrimage route begins and ends, regardless of which direction you choose. The path takes you to very different places on your pilgrimage. You hike over the gentle hills of the Weserbergland, through the heights of Vogler and Solling and pass through wide meadows in the Eichsfeld. In the embracing silence of the mixed forests, through which you walk, you will find peace and distance from the noise of the world.
Whether alone, with friends or family - the easy to walk route with its gentle ascents is suitable for pilgrims, long-distance hikers and those who want to become one. No special knowledge is required. The pilgrimage route can basically be hiked all year round, but the warmer months are recommended. In addition to sturdy footwear, you should bring weatherproof and warm clothing, a headgear and sun protection.
Due to the good infrastructure, it is usually sufficient to bring provisions for one to two days. You should always have enough water, about two liters, with you. At many stage destinations, various catering options await you. Here you can usually also stay in hotels or guesthouses after prior booking. If you want to stay overnight in the inexpensive pilgrim accommodations along the way, remember to bring a sleeping bag and a mat. You can find more information about the pilgrim accommodations here: loccum-volkenroda.de/downloads/merkmale/internet/angebot-1.pdf.
You can easily reach the starting point of the hike by public transport. From Wunstorf station near Hanover, take the bus to Rehburg and change there to the bus to Loccum. At the end of your pilgrimage, take the bus from Volkenroda to Mühlhausen and change there at the station to the train that will take you home.
