The Three Forests Way is a celebration of three incredible Essex forests that have survived the centuries; Epping, Hatfield and Hainault. If you’re seeking a long-distance route with killer foliage, rich history and sense of tranquility, then you’re in the right place.
For generations, the forests of Essex have held profound cultural significance, weaving themselves into the tapestry of folklore, literature, and art. These ancient woodlands whisper tales of centuries past, and have so much to explore.
The Way features 8 miles (13 km) walking through forests, tied together by beautiful ribbons of meadows and farmland, with idyllic towns and villages dotted in between. There are so many great pubs and eateries on the route, from cosy to unique — including an unexpected oyster shack nestled in the heart of the woods.
The forests showcase their beauty year-round, with each season offering a new experience. From vibrant spring blooms and lush summer foliage to colourful autumn leaves and serene winter landscapes, there’s always a good time to visit.
Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife along the trail. Epping Forest is home to a variety of bird species, including woodpeckers, jays, and owls. If you're lucky, you may also spot deer roaming through the woods. The forest teems with life, so be sure to take your time and appreciate the natural surroundings.
You can expect to take anywhere between four and ten days to complete the Way. My version completes the route in six. I’ve carefully crafted the walk so that each day begins and ends in a location with accommodation options, shops, and places to eat.
The route is conveniently accessible from London, commencing in Epping Green. You can also opt to begin from various nearby locations that are well-connected, including Epping, on the Central Line. To commence from the official starting point, simply catch the 505 bus to the Rising Sun bus stop opposite Nazeing Common from either Waltham Cross or Harlow, both of which have train stations.
Whilst some stages do present more of a challenge on the legs than others, there are no daunting mountains or rugged terrain to conquer, making it accessible and enjoyable for walkers of all skill levels. I’d recommend some sturdy boats for the sometimes uneven and boggy ground, and a waterproof too, as expected with any British hike.
