The 255-kilometre (158 mi) Via Gallura follows the coast of Sardinia in Italy’s historical region of Gallura. It’s part of the Cammino 100 Torri, a route that crosses the entire island. Divided into 12 stages, this adventure starts from Budoni and ends in the medieval village of Castelsardo, passing through the heart of the Costa Smeralda.
The route explores unique coves and granite massifs along the coast. You’ll also find several islands, such as Tavolara and the Maddalena archipelago. The itinerary is mostly flat and doesn’t require any technical skills. However, you’ll need to be fit to take on the occasional challenging section.
Gallura has a unique history, dialect and typical ‘stazzi’ – local homes in rural areas with large lands, sometimes up to 300 hectares (740 acres). A group of stazzi is known as a ‘cussogghja’, a community united by very strong bonds of friendship and collaboration. They’d be associated with a church, which would also be the main common space.
The route passes famous beaches and cultural sites such as the sacred well Sa Testa in Olbia, the fortress of Monte Altura in Palau, and the archaeological site Lu Brandali in Santa Teresa di Gallura. In the northernmost parts of the island, you’ll enjoy wonderful views across to Corsica.
Although some roads are asphalted, they’re often quiet and offer picturesque views of the sea and typical Gallura villages. The region has plenty of accommodation, including well-equipped campsites, but it’s important to book in advance, especially in the summer months. Wild camping is prohibited in Sardinia, although it’s often tolerated on the beaches in summer. During the winter, many facilities close. Along the route, you’ll find numerous kiosks and bars where you can resupply and refill your bottles.
You can travel the Via Gallura in any season, but the ideal months are May, June and September. At these times, you can avoid the crowds and still take advantage of the services. The route is easily accessible thanks to the port and Olbia airport. You can take a bus to Budoni from Olbia or Nuoro, while from Castelsardo you can return to Olbia or reach the nearest town, Sassari.
You’ll remember this adventure in Sardinia, with its green mountains and turquoise waters, for a long time to come. Have a good walk!
