In the fairytale forests of North Hesse in central Germany, the Brothers Grimm collected old stories passed down orally, which we know today as Grimm's fairytales. Tales of Frau Holle and other fairytale characters can, with a little imagination, be found in the Grimm’s homeland of North Hesse. And who knows, perhaps Frau Holle really did live and work on the Hoher Meißner – a fairytale landscape where Hansel and Gretel could pop up at any moment.
On the five stages of the 80-kilometre (50 mi) GrimmSteig trail, each between 14 and 21 kilometres (9 and 13 mi), you’ll get to know the land of stories and fairy tales. You’ll hike through wonderfully tranquil forests, across open fields with stunning views and through small half-timbered villages. The proverbial highlight is the mountain massif of the Hoher Meißner at over 750 metres (2,400 ft). You’ll have to conquer a few metres of climbing in order to relish the magnificent views across the countryside and follow in the footsteps of Frau Holle.
You’ll need sturdy shoes as the paths can be slippery, as well as waterproof and windproof clothing. Pack some lunch and plenty of drinks in your rucksack – the words ‘quiet’ and ‘fairytale’ also mean that refreshment opportunities are limited. Even finding accommodation can be a challenge, so I start and end each stage at a train station or bus stop. Kassel and other larger towns are nearby and it’s easy to travel to the stage destinations every day from there. This increases the total distance a little, but you don't have to search long for the bus stops.
All that’s left is to wish you lots of fun on the GrimmSteig. Feel inspired by the fresh air in the forests, the fabulous views and the fairytale atmosphere.
