Wonder and find yourself – Carinthian Marian Pilgrimage Way

Relax, marvel, pause and wander on less frequented paths. The Carinthian Maria Pilgrimage Trail connects some of the most impressive Maria churches in the state and leads you into remote regions. Starting from Maria Rojach, in the Lavant Valley, you'll make a pilgrimage of nearly 270 kilometres (168 mi) to the famous pilgrims’ church in Maria Luggau in Lesach Valley. In this Collection, I've divided the route into ten stages.

Highlights along the way include well-known, culturally significant pilgrimage sites and churches like Maria Saal, Maria Wörth and Maria Gail. But you can also visit lesser-known places of worship like Maria Siebenbrünn, Göriach and Maria im Graben. These are ten days when you’ll have the opportunity to decelerate, consciously reflect on your own life, and savour every step in the fresh air.

It's not only the architectural treasures along the Carinthian Maria Pilgrimage Trail that enchant, but also the diverse landscapes, from the hilly and lake area in Lower and Middle Carinthia to the impressive mountains in the west of the state. From the Lavant Valley, known as the "Paradise of Carinthia" thanks to its mild climate and fertile soil, you'll cross the wooded ridges of Saualpe into the Görtschitz Valley. Crossing the popular Christofberg, you'll reach Maria Saal and then continue to Klagenfurt. On the southern shore of the dreamy Wörthersee, highlights like the Maria Wörth Peninsula and the Spintikteiche ponds await. After a detour to the Drau River, you'll switch to the Gail River, which accompanies you to your destination in Maria Luggau. Along the way, you'll pass through places like Arnoldstein, Kötschach-Mauthen, and finally the picturesque Lavant Valley.

The individual stages are all fairly long and mostly pass through remote areas. With enough endurance, leisure, and packed lunches, the routes are achievable. In some cases, there's the option to shorten a stage by a few kilometres if you take the bus or train – you’ll find more information in the Tour descriptions. There are only a few, or sometimes even just one, accommodation option at the end of each stage, so be sure to reserve your room in advance. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities for refreshments, although they are a bit scarce in the first four stages.

You can reach the starting point, Maria Rojach, by car, by bus line 5472 from Wolfsberg, or from the St. Paul train stations in the Lavant Valley. From the finish, Maria Luggau, you can take bus line 965 to St. Lorenzen, where you can then take line 5050 to Kötschach. In the other direction, you can use line 965 to get to Tassenbach train station.

The Carinthian Maria Pilgrimage Trail offers ten days of pilgrimage enjoyment – allowing you to find mental peace while simultaneously strengthening your body.
