The Aletsch, in Switzerland, is the largest and longest glacier in the Alps. The huge mass of ice is 22 kilometres (14 mi) long, 78 square kilometres (48 sq mi) in area and with an ice thickness of up to an incredible 900 metres (2,950 ft). Even more impressive, however, is the moment you first see the glacier in all its glory from the Härdernagrat, while spectacular mountains tower up to over 4,000 metres (13,000 ft) all around.

You’ll experience this and much more on the Aletsch Panorama Trail. In three days you hike from the resort of Belalp along the mighty Aletsch Glacier to the idyllic village of Bellwald. As well as the breathtaking vistas of the Valais region and its famous mountains, with the Matterhorn chief among them, it’s the magnificent views of the two immense glaciers, the Aletsch and Fiescher, that you will remember. Unfortunately, you can also clearly see the consequences of global warming here, because the glaciers are retreating further and further. The Aletsch Glacier, for example, is losing about 50 metres (165 ft) of its length every year.

The two dizzying suspension bridges that you cross add even more to this remarkable hike. In addition to sure-footedness and sturdy shoes, you need a head for heights. However, the bridges give you a great view of the rushing rivers below.

It’s quieter in the picturesque Aletsch forest, where old stone pines and larches dominate the landscape. The magnificent Villa Cassel towers above the trees. The villa houses the informative Pro Natura Aletsch Visitor Centre. Take some time, because it’s definitely worth a visit.

The beginning of July to October is the time to do this adventure, as the Aspi-Titter suspension bridge is only accessible during this time. It’s worth finding out in advance what the conditions of the trails are like and booking accommodation ahead of your visit. As the weather in the mountains can change quickly, you should always pack suitable rain gear, warm clothing and sun protection.

You can easily reach both the start and end points of the tour by public transport. You can find more information at: sbb.ch/en/timetable.html?tracking-marketingurl=timetable

I wish you lots of fun and many unforgettable moments. Enjoy the great views and the tranquillity of nature.
