Pictuesque towns are nestled between dense forests, babbling brooks, hilly landscapes and magnificent scenery. Small paved roads wind through this patchwork. The Ústecký kraj, also known as the Aussig region, in the northern part of Bohemia in the Czech Republic is an excellent playground for road cycling. A fellow enthusiast, Jakob, and I embarked on a splendid road bike Tour in northern Bohemia last year, and the experience was so exhilarating that I’m eager to share this route with you.
This three-stage Collection makes for a comfortable weekend adventure, with each individual Tour suitable for a day trip. Convenient access points such as Dresden make it even more enticing. From Dresden, for example, the train takes a little over two hours to the start point in Olbernhau.
The route commences with a gradual ascent, an ideal warm-up for the cycling ahead. The first stage concludes in the charming, petite town of Kadaň. The second day offers a diverse ride through a variety of landscapes. Particularly noteworthy is the second half of this journey, characterised by undulating hills. The day culminates in a scenic and exhilarating descent to a bathing lake in Ústí nad Labem. On the return leg to Dresden, we veered from the Elbe route and opted for a direct path through the Ore Mountains.
The roads, almost without exception, are in impeccable condition, with little traffic. Accommodation options in the stage towns are limited, underscoring the importance of booking well in advance. Don't forget to pack your swimsuit, as the route takes you past several inviting lakes. The Czech cuisine is delicious too. Whether it's the famed baked cheese, succulent sirloin steak with dumplings or delectable chocolate cake – you can replenish your energy levels as you please. After completing a stage, treating yourself to a refreshing Czech beer is truly well-deserved.

The first stage begins in Olbernhau, which you can reach by train in just over an hour from Chemnitz and in just over two hours from Dresden. In this way you can bridge a few meters in altitude, but don't worry, there are still a few left for you. Right at the beginning, the route takes you along a beautiful…

You leave the main square of Kadaň through the narrowest alley in the Czech Republic and drive down to the Eger. There you can enjoy a great view of the old town. After several small climbs, you roll down a number of kilometers and can let your eyes wander over the landscape. Then you drive in the Eger…

From Ústí nad Labem to Dresden you can also drive along the Elbe through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. But we decided to take the direct route with the many meters of altitude difference. Out of Ústí, the first 15 kilometers are steadily uphill. Moderate at first, then twice fairly steep towards the…
