The European long-distance trails connect countries and people – and even cross the Mediterranean. The European Trail 4 (E4) runs 10,500 kilometres (6,524 mi) from Gibraltar through Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, the Greek mainland and Crete to Cyprus. In this Collection, I present the section of route through Cyprus, which was added in 2005.

Varied and challenging, this part of the E4 explores the third largest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus. Along the way, rugged coastal landscapes and turquoise seas alternate with remote forest passages high up in the Troodos Mountains. The trail passes through some of Cyprus' most charming areas, including the Akamas Peninsula, Paphos Forest and Cape Greko. The route starts and finishes at sea level but rises to almost 2,000 metres (6,500 ft) through the interior. This means you have to be prepared for big differences in weather conditions between the mountains and the ocean.

The trail connects Cyprus’ two airports, Paphos and Larnaca. But here, I present to you a somewhat slimmed down version, because in the very east of the island the official course of the E4 draws a loop and leads you through a less exciting landscape back to Larnaca. So, in this Collection, you hike almost 500 kilometres (310 mi) between Paphos airport and Cape Greko over 25 stages.

For this walk, you need good fitness and endurance and a love of camping. Accommodation along the E4 is few and far between. Wild camping is officially forbidden in Cyprus, however it is tolerated. Generally, Cypriots are an open and hospitable people; you can also ask locals if you’re allowed to camp on their property. Otherwise, you usually have the option of hitchhiking or taking a cab to the nearest town with a guesthouse.

In the Troodos Mountains, you’ll often be in remote and uninhabited forest areas. Therefore, take enough water and food with you, as well as the appropriate equipment. Cyprus is a very safe country. The only thing I would like to warn you about are the poisonous snakes in the mountain regions. They are rare, but can cross your path. It's best to carry a walking stick and stay alert.

The best months for hiking in Cyprus are April to June and October to December when the weather is not too hot or too cold in the mountains and the coasts are less busy, so it’s easier to find accommodation. On the E4, you walk on straightforward asphalt, gravel and forest trails, so you don’t need any previous experience. Make sure to pack enough sunscreen, water and your swimwear, because a beach or waterfall is usually never far away.

Experience the different faces and tastes of Cyprus up close on the E4, whether you hike the whole route or just pick out the most beautiful parts. You can find another Collection of attractive day Tours on the island here: komoot.de/collection/1358338.
