The Via Cluny takes you on a journey of discovery of the landscapes, skills and heritage inherited from the prestigious Cluny Abbey, in eastern France. This Collection plunges you into the history of the Cluny sites, passing through the two founding abbeys of Cluny, Gigny and Baume-les-Messieurs. You'll cruise through the lush green landscapes of the Jura Mountains before glimpsing the plains of Burgundy's Bresse region, and finally ending up in the mountains of the Mâconnais, where your terminus is: Cluny.

The Via Cluny is part of the Chemins de Cluny, the Council of Europe's great "Cultural Routes". Launched in 1987, these routes enable visitors to discover a wide variety of places of interest in terms of heritage, tourism and culture. They demonstrate that the legacy of the different countries of Europe contributes to our shared cultural heritage.

This variant of the Via Cluny from Morteau covers 450 kilometres (280 mi), divided into 21 stages ranging from 8 to 30 kilometres (5 - 19 mi). The stages can be walked individually or as a multi-day adventure, with accommodation and meals available every evening.

The route has a gentle topography and no particular technical difficulties. It’s suitable for anyone in good physical condition. Water and refreshment points are easy to find along the way. However, remember to carry a water reserve of at least 1.5 litres and a rucksack of at least 20 litres, so that you can take a jacket and picnic equipment with you.

The Via Cluny is accessible by public transport. Morteau TER station provides easy access to the start of the route from Besançon, where TGV trains from major cities arrive every day. Once you arrive in Cluny, the Mobigo bus network will take you back to Mâcon Loché TGV station on the Paris-Lyon route in 30 minutes. For those who wish to adjust their entry and exit points on the route, you’ll find transport solutions in some of the stopover towns.

This route is ideal for the summer months, from April to the end of September. Remember to take something to cover your head and don’t forget the sunscreen, as many parts of the route are fully exposed to the sun’s rays.

We wish you a pleasant journey!
