Back in March 2022 I decided to start walking my way around the Cumbria coastline section by section and in no particular order. My komoot and Instagram friends followed along in real time as I slotted the jigsaw pieces together, finishing in September 2022 🧩🥾

Without exception, my long distance walking komoot Collections up to now all represent linear routes completed from A to Z. With this adventure I thought I’d throw all the stages in the air and stitch them all back together when walking them. From F to G, from C to B, from H to I and so on….! A selection of bite-sized adventures that, when combined, add up to a whole journey from A-Z. I want to show that you don’t have to have 2-3 weeks off work to embark on an exciting adventure, you can do it in stages when work, family life, weather and fitness allow. I walked some stages north to south, others south to north, some east to west and others west to east! My shortest section was 13km and my longest was 35km.

Going on an adventure in this style meant I could build my komoot Collection in real time and watch the Collection build slowly until it became a complete whole.

By the time I finished I'd clocked 373km of hiking (with 2,630m of ascent) of coastline in 14 stages.

One of my aims was to show that Cumbria has so much more to offer than just the mountains of the National Park, memorable views included –
- Over the Irish sea to the Isle of Man
- Over the Solway Firth to Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
- Over Morecambe Bay to Lancashire
- Over the Walney Channel causeway to Piel Island and its ruined castle

Another key feature of the walk is that I started and ended every stage at a train station or bus stop and showed how it's possible to hike the full coast path using only public transport.

Some of the route is waymarked (particularly the paths that have already been adopted by the England Coast Path National Trail) but some of the route is wild and seldom used. Each day brought a variety of Highlights – from ruined lighthouses and windmills, to quiet beaches, to nature spots around Foulshaw Moss, Drumburgh Moss and Hodbarrow Nature Reserves and to seaside cafes/pubs offering the best treats along the route.

My favourite stage was Workington to St Bees (particularly the stretch between Whitehaven and St Bees).
