The peddler sold his goods door-to-door and at markets long ago. They were successful along the route from Germany towards the Dutch coast, where they visited old trading towns such as Oldenzaal, Deventer and Amersfoort to sell their merchandise. The Marskramerpad from Bad Bentheim to The Hague is named after them.
In total, you walk 372 kilometers via Amersfoort to the Green Heart and Leiden and continue your way along the beautiful estates between Wassenaar and The Hague. Eventually, you finish with a view of the sea on the North Sea beach.
Because you cross the Netherlands from east to west, you enjoy almost all types of landscapes that our country is rich in. Twente and Salland, the Veluwe and the Gelderse Valley are just a few examples. In addition, the route is varied with interesting and historical cities.
Haven't you had enough of it after this hike? The route is part of the European hiking trail network E11, which runs all the way from Bad Bentheim to Lithuania.
You can choose to walk the entire route from the German border to The Hague, but also per individual stage. Many stages start or end at a train station, especially in the larger villages and cities. Do you want to stay overnight to go hiking again the next day? Then delve into the possibilities beforehand. Of course, it is also easy here in the cities with the many hotels and B&Bs. If you finish a bit more remote, it is smart to orientate and reserve in advance.
Would you rather divide the route into different stages yourself? Then you will find the complete route of the Marskramerpad here: komoot.nl/tour/602780202.
