Great British Mountain Walks — eight adventurous UK hikes

From the picturesque lochs, rugged peaks and famous majesty of the Scottish Highlands to the bristling ridges of Snowdonia and the gorgeous tarns, crags and fells of the Lake District, Britain is truly blessed with mountain landscapes. The sheer variety of character offered by different regions gives hikers, climbers and mountaineers a lifetime of places to explore and adventures to enjoy.

Choosing the finest walks across this vast arena is no mean feat. The quality of a day in the hills depends on so much more than simply where you are. The time of year, the conditions and your companions all play a part. You can have an incredible time on a peak barely anyone has heard of, or a miserable time on a well known favourite. It’s all part of what adventure is.

Nevertheless, in this Collection, we’ve selected eight of our best walks in the UK’s mountains. They are walks that we’ve never failed to enjoy, walks of a lifetime that are guaranteed to leave you grinning from ear to ear.

Our selection includes well known classics, such as the Snowdon Horseshoe and the Ring of Steall, as well as lesser trodden but no less spectacular routes that we think should be on everyone’s bucket list. We visit England, Scotland and Wales to tackle stunning horseshoe routes and exciting ridge traverses, as well as the best hiking routes up icons like Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Helvellyn.

In terms of technical difficulty, these walks range from hikes with the occasional rocky step to sustained scrambling routes. Adventurous walkers should have no difficulties and the use of ropes and harnesses are not required. A decent pair of hiking boots will give your feet the comfort and support they need to tackle the terrain. Waterproofs, warm layers and sun cream are also essential, as well as insect repellent for those pesky Scottish midges.

These are long, strenuous and challenging hikes that are best saved for summer, when the daylight hours are longest. With the exception of Snowdon’s summit café, once you’re on the hill, there are no facilities, so you will need to carry your food and water in your backpack.

Every hike in this Collection is much tougher in winter, when snow is likely to be lying on the peaks. During this time, the routes are the preserve of experienced and suitably equipped winter mountaineers only.
