The Steinfurter Land is said to be the most beautiful cycling region in the Münsterland in West Germany. The six varied Tours in this Collection are themed and reveal the area’s diverse beauty. You dive deep into the region’s pristine nature, cycle through beautiful parks, past historic places and ride by picturesque farms and ancient windmills. Some rides take you through mysterious moors whilst others explore rare heathlands. On hot days, you can cool off in a stream en route too.
The Steinfurter Land has lots to discover besides cycling. Look out for the region’s diverse wildlife and plant species such as lark, snipe and blackthorn. There’s a wide range of cultural activities, lively events and shopping opportunities too, as well as cosy accommodation, delicious culinary offerings and friendly hosts.
In this beautiful region, you can work hard on your bike during the day and pamper yourself in the evening – a day well spent.
Metelen is the smallest municipality in the Steinfurter Land region and yet it can look back on a long history. Before you start, you should definitely roll through the town and risk a few glances, for example at the beautiful parish church and the historic Plagemann mill. There is a lot to discover here - but don't forget: You are here for cycling. So, let's go!
This tour begins and ends in Greven, directly on the Ems. And maybe you are wondering why the city protects itself from the mostly tranquil little river with such high dykes? The answer lies in the past: straightening the river bed always leads to flooding. Today we know that you have to give space to a river. On this tour you will be able to see later that large parts of the Ems have already been renatured.

The skylark is “to blame” for giving this tour its name. With a little luck, their singing will be your soundtrack for the beautiful route in the north of the Steinfurter Land, on which turquoise sparkling water, historical buildings and even real open-air art await you. Cycling is a special pleasure on the sections of the Münsterland cycle track, which runs on a former railway line.
The name says it all: On this tour you will repeatedly follow different streams, pass natural springs and all kinds of water mills. And although the route is rather short, it takes you up to 140 meters: The Schöppinger Berg is the highest point of the tour and rewards you with a beautiful descent down to Horstmar, the town of Burgmannshöfe.
This 34-kilometer-long Venn route, which bears its name for a reason, runs through damp meadows, past "quarry ponds", along streams, a former canal and of course the moors. So it will be really idyllic, even though you start in the center of Emsdetten. The tour connects the city center with the nature reserve "Emsdettener Venn" and offers you a special kind of nature experience in one of the last raised bogs in northern Germany.
