Originally wanting to ride through the (shortest) night to experience both sunset and sunrise, me and my friend eventually approached it differently because of the forecast of stormy wheather. With the sun hidden behind a curtain of clouds we rode into a gloomy night with thunder and lightning and persistent rainfall. Not really what we envisioned that summer solstice would look like, but we enjoyed the weird atmosphere.

The 12 Hours Of May challenge reminded me to plan in a Tour I had contemplated for too long. I intended this ride as a long day ride but thought it might be nice to approach it as an overnighter.
Starting in my home town Sint-Niklaas and heading up towards Ghent Canal Zone to enter the Region Meetjesland, gateway to the Belgian Coast, the route took me along waterways and creeks to end up at the North Sea.
My destination was the renewed visitor centre of Het Zwin nature reserve and bird sanctuary, designed by Coussée-Goris-Huyghe architects, a building I’ve been wanting to check out. The covered picnic area was my bivvy spot for the night.
Beautiful scenery along the route, and plenty of wildlife spotting. Weak sunshine and gusting head winds.
