    Cool in Glenloy

Very cold at times in the mist below the top of the inversion. Exploring all of the forest tracks, often there and back.

Taking advantage of some perfect, early winter weather. Eilean Shona was the obvious choice, with views over the the Inner Hebrides, Eigg, Muck and Rum. We took an anti-clockwise journey. One of my top five paddle campsites is at the south-west tip of the island. Make sure you carry water, in case the small burn is not running.

First visit to cycle in Northumberland, hopefully not the last, with Dave and Charlotte. Gravel (mostly), mud and grass. Only one big hill to gain the high, rolling ridge lines. Fifty % of battery remaining.

Glen Feshie/Tromie loop. One big hill on the traverse over into Glen Tromie. 49% of battery used and a fair amount of 'turbo'. Without turbo assist the link from Glen Feshie over to Glen Tromie would be very challenging. A remote area, with plenty of good mountain bike gravel trails. We were blessed with good autumn weather and colours. It had been raining all day at home in Fort William!

A misty, windless autumn day with rare glimpses of the sun. The well-kept Ardverikie estate covers a large area of the Scottish west highlands, bordering with Strathspey to the east, and is surrounded by numerous 'Munro' mountains. Responsible access for all and development of renewable energy sources are high priorities here. A large pump storage scheme is in the pipeline for development and will raise the height of Lochan na h-Earba by twenty metres, I am told. The estate will build a new footpath to the foot of Ardverikie Wall, one of Scotland’s best 'severe' grade rock climbs. Fingers crossed that it will be rideable on a mountain bike!

I need to do that before the wonderful landscape below the Wall is drowned!

Great weather and two nights in the clean and tidy Rum Bunkhouse, after fitting in with the problems that CalMac have with the ferries. Eventually arrived on the passenger ferry, the MV Larven which does take bikes. Rum and it's coastline are very rugged and the views extend to Skye, Knoydart, Coll & Tiree and distant Barra, plus Mull and the Ardnamurchan peninsula. For anyone aiming to ascend the Rum Cuillin, a bike is certainly worth considering, as a means of access to the interior. Either a mountain bike (hardtail) or a gravel bike. For more comfort I used my hardtail E-bike. Don't forget the midge cream and net, as the island is well known for the annoying bugs. On my trip the midges were not at all bad, as the weather was very hot and the bugs are not happy with that. A breeze helps as well.

Sorted! A long time in the planning. Ferry to Castle Bay from Oban. Barra to Eriskay and Bernaray to Leverburgh on ferries. Finally a ferry to Ullapool from Stornoway. Vehicle transfers to Stornoway from the Butt of Lewis and Ullapool to Inverness. Then my wife came up to Inverness and took us home to Fort William. Plenty of good indoor accommodation along the route which helped us avoid the midges and top up the batteries on my E-bike. It's worth booking ahead. Food stores, although not prolific are adequate and reduce the need to carry food. Most will close all day on a Sunday. The best section of the route was the 'Golden Road' alternative for me. Elsewhere the varied landscape moves from completely featureless moorland, through vast expanses of golden sandy beaches. The hills of Harris are the most challenging for cyclists and the whole route is studded with fresh and saltwater lochs. Check out my daughter's (Victoria Kimber) page for more detailed daily sections
