This walk takes you from the leafy suburbs into open countryside and features lovely riverside scenery. Note that the first 1.5 miles / 2.2 km of this stage – through lovely Carr Wood and Bramhall Park – overlap with the final section of the previous stage.

Carr Wood, a beautiful area
This challenging walk can be seen as the climax of the whole GM Ringway as it includes an ascent of Winter Hill, the final ‘big hill’ of the whole route and a location visible from many of the previous and following stages of the trail. The walk requires good visibility and is best suited to those with
Stage 3 of the GM Ringway follows the pretty Ladybrook Valley that weaves through the suburbs of Stockport.
Highlights include:
- A riverside and woodland route between Didsbury and Cheadle villages via Abney Hall Park with its waterfall and ponds
- The Grade I-listed St Mary’s Church in Cheadle, dating
Hillier than the preceding stages of the GM Ringway, Stage 6 connects the train stations at Strines and Marple via a fantastic mix of scenic and heritage sites.
Highlights include:
- The hamlet of Brook Bottom with its traditional country pub
- An exploration of Mellor Moor, a high plateau offering stunning
This scenic route takes walkers right to the edge of the Peak District via some very attractive landscapes. The route uses lovely paths to explore the National Trust’s Lyme estate and its famous hall.
Highlights include:
- Colourful forest paths in Middle Wood and Disleybank Wood
- Sections of the pretty
Stage 1 uses towpaths, walkways, parkland and the Trans Pennine Trail to trace an almost totally traffic-free and tranquil route from the city centre to the verdant Mersey Valley.
Highlights include:
- The towpaths of the historic Rochdale and Bridgewater Canals
- Castlefield’s industrial and transport
This section of the trail explores the Wigan and Salford Mosslands. This peaceful area, formerly used for peat extraction, has benefited from extensive regeneration and is home to more than 150 bird species, rare mammals, amphibians, dragonflies, butterflies and plants.
