FRANCIGENA - Giorno 11 - Bolsena>Montefiascone

Domani Viterbo tappa pianeggiante.

Breakfast and departure. It's 7.30.

You leave Prato among a multitude of wool mills. Not many are active. Many abandoned warehouses.

In Figline it is difficult not to think, in contemplation, of the 29 partisans of 6 September 1944.

You immediately go up to Monteferrato with the green serpentine quarry

Okay, it's warm.

I also met runners so that's good.

And then the only period available is this.

I was cordially welcomed into the Cathedral of Santo Stefano in Prato for the stamp in the sacristy.

As well as in Santa Maria del Fiore.

In between, I crossed the horticultural garden and the Parnassus gardens

Just after Newburn I found a plaque dedicated to George Stephenson the railwayman.

He was born near here and the plaque recalls that he installed a motor for a hydraulic pump here.

At this point the "official" route should have followed the course of the Tyne, passing through the promenade with the famous

Started in continuous rain that didn't let up for a second until Newburn.

I still had fun.

Stop at the church of St Oswald and warming up with coffee and cake at Errington coffee house and off again.

I found a birding hut that I liked more than a little.

In Heddon-on-the-wall there is a large piece of wall

Departure after a full unlimited breakfast at the beautiful YHA at Sill hostel.

Once back on the trail, a short stop at the iconic Sycamore Gap.

Unfortunately the sycamore was cut down on a September night in 2023 by 2 idiotic teenagers whose fur I hope they are smoothing.

A beautiful panorama and mighty

Deliberately short stage, but more tiring than expected, to arrive early at the YHA hostel at Sill a Once Brewed and leave me all afternoon to visit the fort, the vicus and the museum of Vindolanda.

Left Gilsland with the first kilometers into Northhumberland.

Just before Thirlwall Castle we cross and

I decided to make this stage long so as to have it shorter tomorrow.

I passed the airport, not far from the Roman fort of Camboglanna (Castlesteads) with few excavation remains and not open to visitors.

Today I encountered the first remains of the wall and turrets, ending with a stop at the Banna fort

The journey begins from Bowness-On Solway, built on the now disappeared Roman fort of Maia.

Just as Coggabata (Drumburhg), Aballava (Burgh-by-Sands) and Uxelodunum (Carlisle) have disappeared.

At Burgh-by-Sands I allowed myself a 4km round trip detour for a stop at the site where Edward I died of dysentery
