Hardtail mtb with fast rolling tyres or gravel bike with a more 'aggressive' set up (eg chunkier tyres and possibly some short travel suspension) are the best bikes for this route.
I had more fun on the short but steep rocky sections with my xc trail bike, however a real drag on the roads and paths.
Would recommend :-)

A fair bit of road to get to the Malverns and back. Would have been quicker on a gravel bike but mtb better choice for most of the off road Malvern Hills section or gravel bike with mtb tyres. Avoided all the deeper muddy sections. IMO hardtail mtb with fast rolling tyres would spot on. Great coffee stop at St Anns Well.
