Protestant Town Church Westerkappeln

Highlight • Religious Site

When I passed the church in the center of Westerkappeln, I thought - yes, very pretty, but somehow in a sad state, because the figures on the portals were missing the heads and I saw that after weathering and the gnawing tooth of the time.
But not at all!
The story is different - namely a story of unrest in times of the Reformation and Counter Reformation and back and forth:
From Wikipedia:
Count Otto VII introduced the Reformation in the county of Tecklenburg in 1527. The driving force was Otto's son Konrad, who at that time also spread the iconoclasts with the Reformation (the first iconoclasts in the county as early as 1525.) A second wave of the iconoclasm took place In connection with the Baptists, who took power in Münster in 1534/35, during which time destructions also took place in and around the Westerkappelner Stadtkirche, so that the figures on the south portal, "Ecclesia" and "Synagoge", lost their heads the relief was badly damaged on the south wall of the nave. [1]

During renovations in 1896 and 1923 frescoes were discovered, such as the cross bearing Christ and a representation of Christopherus.

It is noteworthy that the south portal is offset to the west facing the overlying window rose.

The Köppe were thus rejected by those who considered themselves particularly Christian ...
Praiseworthy that such traces are not restored, but have been preserved, because they tell a lot about this country and the history (s) it has.
For this reason too, this church is a real highlight.

Große Sloopsteine Megalithic Tomb

Highlight • Historical Site

The entire structure was originally covered with earth. Because of their size and their relatively good state of preservation, the Sloopsteine are well-known throughout Westphalia and the Osnabrück region. More than 4,000 years ago, this megalithic tomb served as the final resting place for members of the clan who lived here.

Prairie Lake, Westerkappeln

Highlight • Lake

The Präriesee is located near Westerkappeln in North Rhine-Westphalia. Fishing enthusiasts from the surrounding towns of Lotte (approx. 3.8 km from the lake), Osnabrück (4.8 km to the shore) and Mettingen (approx. 6.7 km away) can inquire with the local fishing club about possible access if interested. As this is a private fishing lake, swimming and access for unauthorized persons are unfortunately not permitted. The nearest larger town from which the lake can be visited is Bramsche. In the immediate vicinity, as an alternative for all other lake lovers, there are also the lakes Niedringhaussee (approx. 1.9 km), Attersee (approx. 3 km) and Rubbenbruchsee (approx. 6.6 km).
