Nuremberg Gate, Forchheim

Highlight • Monument

The Nuremberg Gate (from 1698) is the only one of the four former gates that has survived. The representative magnificent portal is based on the main gate (1662) of the Rosenberg Fortress in Kronach. Two smaller side passages flank the passage above which two lions hold the coat of arms of Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn.
This imposing design was definitely a demonstration of power against the Lutheran areas of the margraviate and the imperial city of Nuremberg, which begin immediately to the south.
The curtains (walls) adjoining the sides have disappeared, as has the ravelin with the front gate, which was in front and protected direct access to the main gate.

The Gereonskapelle is first mentioned as a foundation of Forchheim citizen Georg Walrab in a document dated April 28, 1515. The building was profaned in 1896.

Directly adjacent to the Gereonskapelle is the former prince-bishop's office building. Originally, the object was built in 1685 for Katharina Sophie von Eyb, sister of Prince-Bishop Marquard Sebastian Schenk von Stauffenberg. From 1694 it was converted into a prince-bishop's office building and served as a town hall and official residence.

St. Martin's Church ⛪ Old Town Forchheim

Highlight • Religious Site

The Martinskirche can be found in the center of Forchheim:
The church emerged from the own chapel of a Carolingian royal court, in which several synods took place under Carolingians and Ottonians. It was also important in the missionary work of the Main Slavs.
The diocese of Würzburg received the church in 976 through a donation from Otto I, and the diocese of Bamberg in 1017 through an exchange. Around 1200 the old royal church was replaced by a late Romanesque church with a cross-shaped floor plan, of which part of the transept and the crypt below are still preserved. The Bamberg Bishop Leopold von Bebenburg transformed it into a monastery in 1354. In the 14th century, the church was expanded into a high Gothic basilica, but the upper aisles have been hidden under a gable roof since 1540. The main nave of the nave has a plastered flat beamed ceiling. The other parts of the church are vaulted. The tower was first mentioned in 1406, and has had its current shape since 1670.
With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803, the Forchheim Abbey came to the Electorate of Bavaria, which had already occupied it militarily the previous year. With the secularization of the monastery, the church became an ordinary parish church in 1803.

Long-established brewery with restaurant: For snacks - you can bring your own - there is a cool Seidla. But the decision is not that easy, because the brewery produces over 15 types of beer.

The finest Upper Franconian beer culture is concentrated here in Forchheim's Kellerwald. With 24 beer cellars, the selection of different types of beer is simply terrific, even if not all of the cellars are always open at the same time. Here again it is clear: Franconia is a region of pleasure!

When visiting Forchheim you should definitely visit the Kellerwald. You can enjoy Franconian snacks and beer from the local breweries under the trees.

The cellars were formerly used to store the beer, at some point you came to auszuschchenken the cool beer directly at the basement. This resulted in the beer cellars that offer beer garden operation with snacks throughout the summer. In the meantime houses have been built over a lot of storage cellars and a year-round cultivation up to the upscale kitchen is offered.
